Top three things to travel with

Three of my top things to travel with:

1. A travel shawl or pashmina. This is critical. Here’s why:

  • Transportation options are unpredictable in terms of temperature
  • I like to be covered when I sleep
  • This can double as a wrap at the beach
  • Or a blanket in a park
  • It can be used as a scarf, an accessory, you can even tie it right to make it a pouch or bag
  • You can cover your electronics with it if you leave them in a hotel or car
  • You can spruce up any outfit with it
  • I could go on…

My favorite pashmina doesn’t have fringe and is in either a neutral black or grey or a funky, go with anything bright like grass green, teal or red. My favorite pashminas are ones I bought on the streets of New York – 3 for $10. They are just as good as any and there’s no stress if you loose it or get it dirty. Some I’ve found recently include this beautiful grass green one from etsy or these multi-colored options (unfortunately, these have fringe, but if you’re committed, you can re-tie the fringe and cut off the excess).

Also, check out this tutorial on a bunch of different ways to wear this.

2. Music. I usually carry my iPhone and my iPod nano.  I pre-load my favorites plus a few new albums that friends have reco-ed or I’ve found on some of my fave music blogs (Gorilla vs. Bear, Pitchfork, CoS) so I can have something new to listen to. As far as headphones, I’m a big fan of my O’Neill Covert earbuds, since they don’t take up much room, but I also love my foldable Sony MDR-V700 headphones which come in their own little travel bag for easy transport. The sound quality is phenomenal, especially is you’re listening to things with a heavy bassline, but they do take up quite a bit more room than an earbud.

3. Face Wipes. Seriously. These things have saved my sanity over and over again.
